That Time I Saw David Sedaris In Edmonton And He Called Me Back For A Second Visit During The Book Signing

This morning I drove to Edmonton, checked into the Holiday Inn Express and found my way to the Convention Center to time how far away I was (15 minute walk).

Doors opened at 5 pm and he signed books until 6 pm, then did his schtick to a sold out crowd (very good) and then signed books after.   I was prepared to stand in line afterward but the line up wasn’t too bad before, so I got in line and befriended this nice lady beside me.  As we stood together and chatted for about 45 minutes, I mentioned I’d come from Saskatoon.

As we got closer to the front of the line, we got excited that we might be lucky enough not to run out of time before he had to stop and sure enough we made it.

When we were next, she got behind me and I said, “Oh no…go ahead!”  But she insisted I go before her.

As I stepped to the table, this occurred:

DS:  You want to have that argument…NOW?  (Because there were HUNDREDS of people in line)

BC:  I didn’t mind if she went ahead of me.

DS:  You are a real gentleman.

BC:  I try.

DS:  That was vey nice of you.  Here’s your book.

BC:  Thank you very much.

I stepped aside and let my new friend take her turn and I went to pee.  When I came out of the bathroom, she was still talking to him, getting her book signed, and as I walked by he said:

DS:  Hey, come back over here.

BC:  immediately rushes over

DS:  This lady was just telling me you drove 5 hours to get here.

BC:  I did!

DS:  Well, thank you.   Are you here alone?  Are you in a hotel?

BC:  Yes, a hotel.

DS:  Which one?

BC:  The Holiday Inn Express

DS:  Well , that sounds kinda awful but you know I stayed in the Fairmont here before and it’s not all that nice.  The rooms aren’t great.

BC:  Oh wow.   I’m surprised.

DS:  Ya, so was I.   Well thanks for coming and enjoy the evening.

BC:  thinking….um ya, I will!!  😁😆😄

He wrote in my book “Our gentleman friend”.   In the woman’s book,  he drew a lame coloured flag.

I won!

😂

His white pantaloons and shiny silver shoes were really….”something”! 😂🤣.

And a button that I think said “Trump Is A Fink’!

Departure April 1…And That Ain’t No Joke

And so, with a grateful heart and a car full or art projects (carefully wrapped in dirty clothes), I packed up, took Pete the laundry, clickers and keys, got my last Peet’s and I was away!   Checked into my nice Air B and B in Vegas and then headed for The Sphere, only about 15 minutes away.   What a crazy place.   Loved it.   Great movie, creepy AI robots but a very cool, futuristic building.   Loved the changing outside of it.   Glad I went.   Then some In-N-Out for supper and Day 1 of the return trip home can be called a success!

Day 2 ends after finding a Peet’s in Vegas for breakfast (woohoo), a great audiobook (Famous Last Words by Gillian McAllister) for the 9 hour drive, a nice Airbnb with a soaker tub and some Chick-fil-A.   All good!

Day 3:  back to pants, back to snow, back to Canada, back to Lee’s, back with the geese!

Day 4 is a hang out with Lee day.  Went to Pincher Creek to take some cards to the gallery, out for lunch, an art show and tell, to Stasha’s to see her pottery studio and a nice supper.   Home tomorrow.

And just like that, the winter is done.  Didn’t really hit any snow until Rosetown. Otherwise, smooth and uneventful drive back.

The end.

"I think I'll miss you most of all.”

Sigh.

Until we meet again, “You stay classy, San Diego!” ❤️😍🥰😘
